abstract A process for producing nitrocyclopropane consists in reacting a 1-halo-3-nitropropane comprising a major proportion of 1-iodo-3-nitropropane in an alkali metal amide in liquid ammonia. The 1-halo-3-nitropropane may be prepared by refluxing 1-chloro-3-nitropropane with excess alkali metal iodide in acetone. The 1-chloro-3-nitropropane may be produced by passing chlorine through a mixture of nitropropane and phosphorus pentoxide.
