titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to pressure-clearing opaque films
abstract An opaque, pressure-clearable, porous polymer coating is formed on a support by: (a) forming on a non-fibrous support a coating of a solution of a water-insoluble liner polymer in a water-soluble dialkylamide having a boiling point of at least 100 DEG C., e.g. dialkylamide having C1-4 especially C1-2 alkyl groups, which contains a hydroxyl-containing liquid non-solvent for the polymer of boiling point not above 100 DEG C., e.g. water or a C1-4 alkanol, the amount of non-solvent being 45-97% of that required to form a hazy solution, (b) treating, e.g. by immersing, the coated support with a non-solvent for the polymer which dissolves and extracts the dialkylamtde, so coagulating the polymer and, (c) removing the non-solvent from the coating. Specified linear polymers are those of vinyl halides, acrylic monomers, e.g. methacrylonitrile, acrylic esters, mixtures thereof and copolymers of such monomers with minor amounts of vinyl organic esters and other vinyl-type monomers, e.g. vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymers. Specified base materials are films of polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose esters, superpolymers, e.g. vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, polyvinyl acetals, polystyrene, polyamides and polyesters, e.g. polycarbonates, polyethylene terephthalate/isophthalate, and esters formed by condensing terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate with propylene glycol, diethylene or tetramethylene glycol and cyclohexane-1,4-dimethanol and the films described in Specification 718,422.
