titleOfInvention Manufacture of pimelic acid
abstract Pimelic acid is prepared either by reacting a mono-chlorocyclohexane carboxylic acid with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide between 250 DEG and 450 DEG C. and then acidifying the salt thus obtained to liberate the free acid or by dehydro-halogenating alpha-chlorocyclohexanecarboxylic acid with an alkali metal hydroxide at 0-110 DEG C. to obtain an alkali metal 1-cyclohexene-1-carboxylate, reacting this product with aqueous alkali metal hydroxide between 250-450 DEG C. and then acidifying the salt to liberate the free acid. The mono-chlorocyclohexane carboxylic acid is preferably alpha-chlorocyclohexane carboxylic acid. This alpha acid may be prepared by chlorinating cyclohexane carboxylic acid with sufficient chlorinating agent to monochlorinate 20% of the acid in a non-aqueous phase from 0-150 DEG C. with a chloride, oxyhalide, oxide or oxygen acid of phosphorus, antimony or arsenic as catalyst. Specified chlorinating agents are chlorine, sulphuryl chloride, phosphorus pentachloride, N-chlorosuccinimide, N-chlorourea and dichlorohydantoin.
