titleOfInvention Graft copolymer blends
abstract Polymer blends comprise a monovinylidene aromatic compound superstrate/diene rubber substrate graft copolymer with a rigid monovinylidene aromatic compound polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution such that there is a difference of not greater than 0.05 specific viscosity unit between the specific viscosities of the highest molecular weight 10% of the polymer and the highest molecular weight 95% of the polymer. The graft copolymer superstrate comprises 20 to 100% by weight of monovinylidene aromatic compound, up to 80% by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and/or a C1-C4 alkyl methacrylate, and up to 20% by weight of acrylic or methacrylic acid, a higher alkyl methacrylate, an alkyl acrylate, a conjugated diene or a dialkyl maleate or fumarate. The graft copolymer substrate consists of a homopolymer of butadiene or isoprene, or copolymers thereof with monovinylidene aromatic compounds, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, amides and nitriles thereof and small quantities of polyethylenically unsaturated monomers. The monovinylidene aromatic compounds used in making the graft copolymer and the rigid polymer are selected from styrene, ar-alkylstyrenes, alpha-methylstyrene and ar-halostyrenes. The rigid polymer may comprise comonomers such as those specified in connection with the graft copolymer superstrate. The Example describes grafting a mixture of acrylonitrile and styrene on to a latex of a butadiene/styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, blending the product with a latex of a styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer, and coagulating the mixed latices. The impact strengths of blends prepared with narrow molecular weight distribution styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers are greater than those of blends prepared with wide molecular weight distribution copolymers.
