titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to copolymer emulsions |
abstract | Copolymer emulsions having high pigment compatibility and good filler absorption power are obtained by polymerizing a mixture of (1) 25-60% by weight of a conjugated diene, (2) 2-20% by weight of acrylamide and/or an a -substitution product thereof and (3) 73-20% by weight of an aromatic monovinyl or monovinylidene compound, it being possible for up to 20% by weight of the aromatic monovinyl or monovinylidene compound to be replaced by another compound copolymerizable therewith. Suitable conjugated dienes are butadi-1, 3-ene, 2-methyl butadi-1, 3-ene, 2, 3-dimethyl-butadi-1, 3-ene, 2-chlorobutadi-1, 3-ene, 2, 3-dichlorobutadi-1, 3-ene and 2-cyanibutadi-1, 3-ene. The following are suitable a -substitution products of acrylamide:-methacrylamide, ethylacrylamide, a -dodecylacrylamide, a -chloroacrylamide, a -cyanoacrylamide and a -carboxyacrylamide. Suitable aromatic monovinyl or monovinylidene compounds are styrene, a -methylstyrene, vinyl toluene, 2-4 dimethyl styrene, 3, 5-dimethyl styrene and p-chloro-styrene. Examples of other compounds which can be polymerized with the aforementioned aromatic vinyl or vinylidene compounds and which can replace the former by up to 20% by weight are: acrylonitrile, a -chloroacrylonitrile acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, a -chloroacrylic acid, the alkyl esters of acrylic acid and of a -allyl-acrylic acids, N-alkyl and N,N-dialkyl-amides of acrylic acid and of a -alkyl acrylic acids, esters of maleic and fumaric acids, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids; unsaturated halogenated hydrocarbons and olefines; as well as mixtures thereof. It is also possible to introduce divinyl compounds or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. These copolymerization components are preferably employed in an amount of from 0.1% to 10% by weight of the monomers. The polymerization of the monomers can be carried out as copolymerization or as graft copolymerization. Known anionic, cationic and non-nitric emulsifiers are employed in an amount of from 1-10% based on the weight of monomers. Protective tolloids may also be employed in an amount of up to 10% based on the weight of the monomers. Redox systems in an amount of from 0.05% to 5% by weight are used as catalysts. Known regulators and stabilizers may also be employed in amounts of from 0.05-3% by weight and 0.5 to 3% by weight respectively based on the weight of monomers. The emulsion copolymerization can be effected at pH values of from 1-12. If preferred copolymer emulsion is obtained by copolymerizing 25-60% by weight of butadiene, from 2-20% by weight of acrylamide and/or methacrylamide and from 73-20% by weight of styrene, it being possible for from 2-10% by weight of the styrene fraction to be replaced by an ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid with an alcohol containing 1-20 carbon atoms. Specification 900,591 is referred to. |
