titleOfInvention Process for coating a surface of an article of a solid material with a thin translucent coloured layer and the article coated by the process
abstract A coating composition for producing translucent coloured films or articles, comprises a solution in an organic solvent (e.g. alcohol) and/or water of a polymeric condensation product derived from an acid ester of silicon (e.g. ortho-silicic acid tetra-methyl ester), the solution containing a metallic ion, which ion may be yielded from cobalt, ferric or vanadium chloride, acetate or nitrate.ALSO:A process for coating a surface of an article with a thin translucent coloured layer comprises applying to the surface a solution in an organic solvent and/or water of a polymeric condensation product derived from an acid ester of an element of Group IV of Mendel<\>aeeff's Periodic Table, but excluding carbon, the solution containing a coloured metallic ion, and heating to remove volatile matter. The article may be a glass plate, window pane, optical filter, glass mosaic, spectacle glasses or a supplementary screen for a television. The coating may be applied by centrifuging, dipping or spraying. The coloured ion may be present in the solution as cobalt, ferric or vanadium chloride, nitrate or acetate. In the examples the solutions comprise condensation products derived from ortho-silicic acid tetra-methyl ester, alcohol, water and vanadium chloride or cobalt nitrate and ferric nitrate.
