titleOfInvention Polycarbonates
abstract The Specification refers to predominantly tetrameric cyclic carbonates of dihydroxy-diaryl-alkanes, -cycloalkanes, -ethers, -sulphides, -sulphoxides and -sulphones. The cyclic tetrameric carbonate of bisphenol-A is made by reacting bisphenol-A with the bischloroformate of bisphenol-A in the presence of methylene chloride and pyridine. Other tetramers may be made in a similar manner.ALSO:A high molecular weight linear polycarbonate is made by heating at above 200 DEG C. and in the presence of water and/or an organic hydroxy compound, a predominantly tetrameric cyclic carbonate of a dihydroxydiaryl-alkane, -cycloalkane, -ether, -sulphide, -sulphoxide or -sulphone. The hydroxy compound may be phenol, a cresol, a xylenol, an ethylphenol, p-tertiarybutylphenol, butanol, hexanol or stearyl alcohol. Polymerization may also be effected in the presence of (a) a chain-breaker which is an organic hydroxy compound or ester (e.g. carbonate) thereof; (b) a branching agent which is a trifunctional organic hydroxy compound (e.g. phloroglucinol) or ester thereof; (c) a catalyst (e.g. lead oxide, zinc oxide, antimony trioxide, sodium methylate, a sodium salt of an aromatic dihydroxy compound, sodium stearate, magnesium stearate, zinc acetate, beryllium acetate or boron phosphate); or (d) a dyestuff, filler, pigment, plasticizer or stabilizer. The polymers are useful in the manufacture of coatings, fibres, films and other shaped objects.
