titleOfInvention Polymerization of acrylates, methacrylates and acrylonitriles and catalysts for same
abstract 965,011. Polyacrylates, polymethacrylates and polyacrylonitrile. FMC CORPORATION. Feb. 7, 1962, No. 4754/62. Heading C3P. An acrylate, methacrylate or acrylonitrile having the general formula: where R <SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or methyl and R<SP>2</SP> is CN or R<SP>3</SP> being an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, alkaryl or N,N-dialkyl amino alkyl, is polymerized to a high molecular weight polymer using a catalyst consisting of a mixture of an amide of lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium or caesium and a compound having the general formula M(OR<SP>4</SP>)n where M is boron, aluminium, titanium or zirconium and R<SP>4</SP> is ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl, iso-butyl, amyl, 2-ethylhexyl, dodecyl, stearyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, tolyl or phenyl ethyl, n being the valence of M. The polymer may be a homopolymer of any one of the above monomers or may be an interpolymer of any two or more of them. The catalyst is prepared by mixing the amide and the M(OR<SP>4</SP>)n compound together in a solvent such as toluene. Preferably from 2 to 7 mols of the amide are mixed with every mol of the oxide. The. polymerization is carried out at room temperature or lower. In Examples 1 to 5 and 7 to 10 the catalyst is a mixture of sodamide and tetraisopropylorthotitanate and the monomer is one of the following: methyl-, ethyl-, isobutyl- or secbutyl-methacrylate; methylacrylate or acrylonitrile. In Example 6 lithium amide is used. In Examples 11 to 15 the amide is sodamide, the monomer is methylmethacrylate and the oxide compound is tetrastearyl-, tetra-amyl- or tetracyclohexyl-orthotitanate; or aluminium isopropylate or triethylborate.
