titleOfInvention Trithiocyanuric acid derivatives and their use in curing unsaturated polymers
abstract A compound of structural formula: <FORM:0964718/C1/1> where Y is chlorine, is prepared by chlorinating trithiocyanuric acid. In a example a slurry of trithiocyanuric acid in carbon tetrachloride was added to a solution of chlorine in carbon tetrachloride at - 10 DEG C. The mixture was then allowed to stand at room temperature for 16 hours. It was then filtered and evaporated under vacuum and the triazine trisulphenyl trichloride filtered off. The compound may be used in curing polymers (see Division C3).ALSO:The invention comprises thiocyanuric acid derivatives having the general formula: <FORM:0964718/C1/1> where Y is-RCl wherein R is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having its two free valencies on vicinal carbon atoms. These compounds may be prepared by reacting the 1,3,5 triazine 2,4,6 trisulphenyl trichloride with an aliphatic olefine. In one example the triazine trisulphenyl trichloride is reacted with 1 mol. of isobutene in toluene in a pressure bottle at ambient temperatures. In another example 1-octene is used similarly. The compounds formed may be used as curing agents for rubbers (see Division C3).ALSO:Polybutadiene, polyisoprene and isobutyleneisoprene copolymers may be cured by incorporating into the polymer a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0964718/C3/1> where Y is Cl or -RCl, wherein R is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having its two free valencies on vicinal carbon atoms. The compound is incorporated into the polymer on a mill and maintained at an elevated temperature. Examples describe the curing of various of the above polymers using the trithiocyanuric acid chloride or the chloro-isobutyl di-chloro or chloro-octyl di chloro derivative, carbon black sometimes being incorporated in the mixture.
