titleOfInvention Improvements relating to filters
abstract 963,250. Infra-red filters. BARR & STROUD Ltd. Aug. 29, 1960 [Sept. 12, 1959], No. 31146/59. Heading G2J. An infra-red filter comprises two crossed polarizing films, each film being of synthetic resin stained with a dichroic substance, and cover glasses between which the films are located, the glass transmitting not less than 80% in the wavelength range 0. 8 to 2. 5 microns and transmitting less than 1% of visible radiation, the filter absorbing practically all visible light and transmitting a band of peak not less than 65% in the range 0. 7 to 3 microns. As shown in Fig. 2 the filter comprises crossed polarizing films 11 which are united to each other and to cover glasses 13 by cement 12. The films are preferably formed as described in Specification 549,668 of stretched polyvinyl alcohol which is dyed for twelve seconds in a dye bath composed of 40 gramms iodine, 200 gramms ammonium iodide and 400 c.c.'s of water. Alternatively, two pairs of crossed polarizers may be disposed in series between colour glasses. Optical transmission data are given for both filters which may be used in a night sighting device with an image converter or for spectroscopic purposes.
