titleOfInvention Process for the polymerization of conjugated dienes
abstract Conjugated dienes e.g. butadiene or isoprene are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst which consists of a Co and/or Ni compound with AlX3 (where X is a halogen) and a Si compound of general formula SiHxY(4-x) where x=1, 2 or 3 and Y is a hydrocarbon radical or a group SiRzH(3-z) in which R is a hydrocarbon radical and z=0, 1, 2 or 3. Polymerization is preferably effected in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent e.g. benzene or isooctane. When butadiene is polymerized according to the above procedure the result is almost entirely 1:4 polymerizations. Isoprene produces a little 3:4 polymerization in addition to 1:4. Examples are given. Specifications 904,404 and 946,179 are referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst consists of a Co and/or Ni compound with AlX3 (where X is a halogen) and a Si compound of general formula SiHxY(4-x) where x=1, 2 or 3 and Y is a hydrocarbon radical or a group SiRzH(3-z) in which R is a hydrocarbon radical and z=0, 1, 2 or 3. Preferably the Co and/or Ni compound is a salt of an organic acid, e.g. nickel naphthenate. Alternatively Co and/or Ni halides may be used as complexes with amines, alcohols or ketones. The preferred aluminium halide is AlCl3, but AlBr3 may also be used. Specified Si components include silicon trimethyl hydride, silicon triethyl hydride, silicon diethyl dihydride, silicon tributyl hydride, silicon diphenyl dihydride, pentaethyl disilane and 1 : 1 dimethyl silane. Examples are given. Specifications 904,404 and 946,179 are referred to.
