titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to alkyd resins
abstract Alkyd resins are made by reacting phthalic anhydride with a monoglyceride or pentaerythritol partial ester of a fatty acid, and subsequently reacting the partial reaction product with tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane. The partial esters may be used as much or may be formed in situ from fatty oils or fatty acids. Reaction may be effected in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. lead oxide or calcium naphthenate) and an azeotropic liquid (e.g. benzene or toluene). Specified fatty acids are those derived from linseed, tall, soya or castor oils. A paint is made by dissolving the alkyd in mineral spirits and adding titanium dioxide, methyl ethyl ketoxime, lead naphthenate and cobalt naphthenate.
