titleOfInvention Estrapentaenes and their production
abstract The invention comprises steroids of the general formula: <FORM:0957927/C2/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and 1, 3, 5(10), 6, 8-estrapentaen-3-ol-17-one allyl ether, and the preparation of the steroids of the above general formula by treating d-equilenin with an alkyl nitrate and an alkali metal tertiary alcoholate to form 16-nitrosoequilenin, treating this compound with an excess of zinc and an acid to form 16-oxo-17-hydroxy-equilenin, and reducing this compound with an alkali metal boro or aluminium hydride; and the preparation of 1, 3, 5(10), 6, 8-estrapentaen-3-ol-17-one by refluxing d-equilenin and allyl bromide in ethanol in the presence of potassium carbonate. d-Equilenin ethyl ether is prepared by refluxing d-equilenin and diethyl sulphate in ethanol in the presence of potassium carbonate.
