titleOfInvention Stereospecific polymerisation of vinyl ethers
abstract In a process for the stereospecific polymerization of vinyl alkyl ethers in which the alkyl group contains up to 5 carbon atoms, the ethers are polymerized in the presence of a cationic catalyst comprising a solid solution of aluminium trichloride in a trichloride of a transition metal of Group IV or V of the Mendel<\>aeef Periodic Table. The catalyst may be prepared by reducing the transition metal tetrahalide with aluminium in the presence or absence of aluminium trichloride. Part of the aluminium chloride may be removed from the catalyst so formed by sublimation under reduced pressure or by treatment with complex foaming solvents such as ethers and tetrohydrofuran. The catalyst may be further activated by treating with a solution of an organo aluminium compound in a hydrocarbon solvent. Polymerization may be effected in liquid media, e.g. toluene or mixtures thereof with aliphatic hydrocarbons and/or ethers such as anisole. Preferred transition metal trichlorides are titanium and vanadium trichlorides. Examples describe the polymerization of vinyl isobutyl ether in the presence of a titanium trichloride-aluminium trichloride solid solution in (1) toluene, (3) toluene and diethyl ether and (4) toluene and anisole; (2) in toluene in the presence of an aluminium trichloride-titanium trichloride catalyst which has been treated with a toluene solution of ethylaluminium dichloride; and in the presence of aluminium trichloride-titanium trichloride catalysts which have been extracted with diethyl ether in (5) toluene and (6) toluene and propylene. Crystalline polymers are obtained which may be extruded into filament and formed into films which may be oriented by stretching. Specification 906,604 is referred to.
