titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of polyesters
abstract Polyesters are obtained by reacting (a) an anhydride of a dicarboxylic and/or polycarboxylic acid with (b) a cyclic carbonate and/or sulphite of an aliphatic diol and/or polyol. Reaction is effected at 100 DEG -220 DEG C. in the presence of a polyesterification catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid toluene sulphonic acids, potassium bisulphate, zinc chloride, alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates, trinonyl amine, pyridine, N-ethylpyridine, sodium fluoride, lithium bromide, potassium iodide or potassium diphthalate. Specified anhydrides are those of succinic, maleic phthalic, diphenic, tetrahydrophthalic, naphthalic, trimellitic and pyromellitic acids. Specified carbonates and sulphites are those of ethylene glycol, 1:2- or 1:3-propylene glycol, 1:3- or 1:4-butylene glycol, pentaerythritol and glycerol. Examples describe the production of polyesters from (1) Succinic anhydride and ethylene sulphite; (2) Phthalic anhydride and 1:2-propylene carbonate; (3) Maleic anhydride and ethylene carbonate; (4) Maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and ethylene sulphite-the polyester was copolymerized with styrene in the presence of tert. butyl pyrocatechol, benzoyl peroxide and cobalt naphthenate; (5) Phthalic anhydride and ethylene carbonate; (6) and (7) Phthalic anhydride, ethylene carbonate and pentaerythritol disulphite; (8) Phthalic anhydride and 1:3- or 1:4-butylene glycol sulphite.
