titleOfInvention | Graft polymeric compositions |
abstract | An oil-soluble basic nitrogen-containing graft polymer is made by polymerizing a basic nitrogen-containing monomer with a hydrocarbon polymer formed by the copolymerization of a C2-C6 aliphatic mono-olefin and a vinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon. Basic monomers specified are dialkylaminoalkyl acrylates, methacrylates, fumarates, maleates citraconates and mesaconates, vinyl pyridines N-vinyl pyrollidone and piperidone, and N-methylol acrylamide and methacrylamide. The preferred hydrocarbon polymers are copolymers of isobutene with styrene, alpha-methyl styrene and its m-isopropyl and p-isopropyl derivatives, and vinyl naphthalene. The graft polymerization may be carried out by polymerizing the basic monomer with the hydrocarbon polymer in the presence of a free-radical catalyst, e.g. t-butyl peroxide and hydroperoxide, benzoyl, lauryl, stearyl, acetyl, acetone, triacetone, diethyl, sodium and barium peroxides, and azobisisobutyronitrile. Alternatively the hydrocarbon polymer may be dissolved in a solvent and ozone passed through the solution, followed by polymerization of the basic monomer in the solution of ozonized polymer; or a mixture of the hydrocarbon polymer and basic monomer may be subjected to severe physical working. The examples describe the following processes: (1) polymerizing dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate in a xylene solution of an isobutene/styrene copolymer with the aid of t-butyl peroxide; (2) as in (1) but using an isobutene p-isopropyl-alpha-methyl styrene hydrocarbon polymer; (3) polymerizing beta - diethylaminoethyl methacrylate in an ozonized heptane solution of an isobutene/ styrene copolymer; and (4) working in a ball mill a cyclohexane solution of an isobutenestyrene copolymer and beta-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate. The resulting graft polymers are used as additives to lubricating oils. The Specification describes also the copolymerization of isobutene and p-isopropyl-alpha-methyl styrene with a boron trifluoride catalyst.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil and a viscosity index and detergency improving amount of a graft polymer obtained by polymerizing a basic nitrogen containing monomer with a copolymer of a C2-C6 aliphatic mono-olefin and a vinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. graft polymers of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate with isobutene/styrene and isobutene/p-isopropyl-alpha-methyl styrene copolymers, and beta-diethyl-aminoethyl methacrylate with isobutene/styrene copolymers. Lubricating oils specified are mineral oils, oils of the alkylene oxide type and esters of adipic, sebacic and azelaic acids. |
