titleOfInvention Production of improved polyester filaments
abstract Polyesters, suitable for manufacturing filaments free from filling (see Division B5), are made of chemically conbining a glycol terephthatic acid polyester with a silicon compound of formula: (X2O)m (SiO2)n, wherein X is hydrogen, a monovalent organic radical or an atomic equivalent of a metal, n is at least one, and m is a number in the range 0-2n, said silicon compounds either being soluble in the polyester or having an average particle size less than 20 millimicrons and being present in amount corresponding to at least 0.001 silicon atoms for each dicarboxylate radical. The silicon compound is added during the stage at which the polyester is being prepared in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst that does not contain silicon (e.g. antimony oxide or tetraisopropyl titanate) or is added to the molten polyester prepared by such a method. It may be colloidal silica, hydrated silica, a silica organosol in which X may be ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl butyl or octyl, a silicate ortho-ester in which X may be methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, butyl, phenyl and p-tolyl or an alkali metal silicate. The glycol component of the polyester may be of formula: HO-(Cp+1H2p+2Yq-1)-OH, wherein p and q are integers and Y is a cycloaliphatic group, an aromatic group, an oxy group or an arylene dioxy group. The dicarboxylic acid component comprises 75-100% mol terephthalic acid and 0,25% mol of another dicarboxylic acid, e.g. adipic, sebacic, imphthalic, dibenzoic, hexahydroterephthalic, diphenoxyethane-4:41-dicarboxylic, p, p1-carbonyl dibenzoic or p, p1sulphonyl dibenzoic acid or sodium 3,5-dicarboxy benzene sulphonate. Delustrants (e.g. titanium dioxide) or colour inhibitors (e.g. phosphoric acid) may also be added to the polycondensation reaction mixture. Specification 578,079 is referred to.
