titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to fuel elements for use in nuclear reactors
abstract 953,873. Nuclear fuel elements. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. June 1, 1960 [June 3,1959; Feb. 26, 1960], No. 19404/60. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel element comprises fissile material enclosed in a sheath permeable to infrared radiation. Removal of heat from the element takes place mainly by radiation and is thus less dependent on contact between the fissile material and the sheath. Tubes 2 of quartz or silicon carbide contain powdered or granular uranium or plutonium oxide or carbide and extend across the steel envelope or a reactor, being connected to the envelope 1, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of an elastic body 3 and a seal member 8. The tubes 2 may incorporate apertured steel reinforcing members and may be evacuated. As shown in Fig. 3, the fuel 11 is contained in crucibles 10 of graphite or silicon carbide, which may be spaced from the walls of the sheath 2 by alumina rings. If the fuel is in compressed and sintered form, the crucibles are not necessary. In Fig. 6 (not shown), fuel elements are supported in a cage-like structure. Alternatively, individual elements are arranged in a duct in a graphite moderator, a space for coolant flow being provided between the elements and the finned wall of the duct. Provision may also be made for controlling fission by circulating a neutron-absorbing fluid, for example a solution containing cadmium or boron, between the sheath and the fuel. For use in a fast reactor rod-shaped sheathed elements are arranged incooling ducts, the walls of which are corrugated and coated with infra-red absorbing material, for example nickel-chromium steel with an oxidised surface layer, or iron, steel, or molybdenum coated with aluminium. Specification 841,545 is referred to.
