titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to hydroxypolyalkylene ethers
abstract The invention comprises hydroxy poly alkylene ethers of a substituted tetrahydropyran, having the general formula: <FORM:0953548/C2/1> wherein m is 0, 1 or 2, R4 is an ethylene radical, propylene radical or a mixture thereof and n is a number from 1 to 100 and their preparation by reacting 3,3,5,5-tetrakis (hydroxymethyl)-4-hydroxy-tetrahydro pyran, 3,3,5-tris (hydroxy methyl)-4-hydroxy-5-methyl-tetrahydropyran or 3,5-di (hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-tetrahydropyran with 1-100 moles of ethylene and/or propylene oxide per hydroxyl equivalent of the pyran starting material in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature of from 110 DEG -170 DEG C. The tetrahydropyran may be used in molten state and if desired with an inert solvent. An alkaline catalyst, e.g., NaOH, KOH and ter.-C4H9OK may be used. In examples: (1) the tetrakis (hydroxy methyl) reactant is condensed with about 9 moles of propylene oxide; (2) the tris (hydroxymethyl) reactant is condensed with 7.1 moles of propylene oxide and (3) the bis (hydroxymethyl) reactant is condensed with a mixture of 8 moles each of ethylene and propylene oxides, in each case under elevated pressure. The products may be used as solvents, detergents and intermediates in the preparation of foamed polyurethanes (see Division C3).ALSO:The invention comprises polyoxyalkylene ethers having the general formula: <FORM:0953548/C3/1> wherein m is 0, 1 or 2, R4 is an ethylene radical, propylene radical or mixture thereof and n is a number from 1 to 100 and their preparation by reacting 3,3,5,5-tetrakis (hydroxymethyl)-4-hydroxy - tetrahydropyran, 3, 3, 5 - tris (hydroxymethyl)-5-methyl-4-hydroxy - tetrahydropyran or 3, 5-dimethyl-3, 5-bis hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxy-tetrahydropyran with 1-100 moles of ethylene and/or propylene oxide per hydroxyl equivalent of the tetrahydropyran reactant at 110 DEG -170 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst e.g., NaOH, KOH or tert. C4H9OK. The tetrahydropyran may be used in the molten state and with an inert solvent at ordinary or raised pressures. The products may be used as solvents, detergents or intermediates in the preparation of polyurethane foams. In examples: (1) the tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) reactant is condensed with ca. 9 moles of propylene oxide; (2) the tris (hydroxymethyl) reactant is condensed with 7.1 moles of propylene oxide; (3) the bis (hydroxymethyl) reactant is condensed with a mixture of 8 moles each of ethylene and propylene oxides; (4) the product of (1) is mixed with 2, 4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanates, trichloro-fluoromethane and minor amounts of dibutyl tin laurate and a silicone oil surfactant and the foamed product is cured.
