titleOfInvention A process for preparing an active platinum group metal catalyst composition
abstract A catalyst composition for isomerizing hydrocarbons, comprising 0,01-2% platinum group metal, 4-50% aluminium halide Friedel-Crofts component and 48-95% activated alumina is prepared by mixing under anhydrous conditions the platinum group metal-activated alumina composition, a C1-7-alkyl aluminium compound and a non-aqueous solvent for the latter, at 40-350 DEG F., and finally contacting the resultant mixture with reactive halogen to convert the alkyl aluminium compound to aluminium halide. Said contacting may be effected at -20 -500 DEG F. and the composition may be subsequently heated in presence of a non-oxidizing gas to 400-700 DEG F. The alumina base may contain small amounts of e.g. silica, magnesia, boria, natural or activated clay (such as kaolinite, montmorillonite, or halloysite), titania, zirconia, or their mixtures. The platinum group metal, i.e. Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Os, or Ir, may be present in metallic or combined form, e.g. sulphide or oxide. Specified halogenating agents for the alkyl aluminium compounds are:-HCl,HBr, Cl3CCH3, p Cl2C:CHCl, CHCl.CHCl, Cl2, Br2, CHCl.CHBr, CCl4, CCl3F,NH4Cl and CCl4/H2. Solvents mentioned are pentane, hexane, heptane and their mixtures. The catalyst composition may contain as an additional ingredient a hydrogen halide. Specifications 735,390, 830,882 and 837,907 are referred to.
