titleOfInvention Improvements relating to implosion barriers for cathode ray tubes
abstract 952,236. Cathode-ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 8, 1961, No. 44002/61. Heading H1D. [Also in Division B5] An implosion barrier is applied to the face of a cathode-ray tube by providing a difference in pressure between the two sides of a deformable sheet spaced from the tube face so that the sheet is deformed towards the tube face to make an initial point contact (not necessarily at the centre of the tube face); the area of contact is then increased radially outwards from the initial contact area. The cathode-ray tube 18 is held in a cradle 17 which is moved upwards after the deformable sheet 29 is sucked downwards to contact the tube face by evacuation of the chamber 12. The deformable sheet may comprise polyvinyl butyral with triethylene glycol di-2-ethyl butyrate as plasticizer, as in Specification 950,350. This material is deformable at room temperature, but with other materials heating may be applied to aid deformation. The plasticizer may be applied in liquid form. Preferably the sheet is trimmed after being applied to the face of the tube to provide tabs for attachment to the usual tube holding strap. A protective thermoplastic sheet of cellulose acetate butyrate may be applied to the sheet 29 or the sheet may be laminated. The surface of the implosion barrier may be etched to reduce light reflection.
