titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a process for the enrichment of ammonia in deuterium
abstract <PICT:0951791/C1/1> In a method of enrichment of ammonia in deuterium by a dual-temperature isotopic exchange between liquid ammonia and a gaseous phase comprising hydrogen (e.g. hydrogen or ammonia synthesis gas), in which the gaseous phase is saturated by direct contact in a scparate exchanger with the vapour of the liquid phase which contains a non-volatile alkali metal amide as a catalyst of the isotopic exchange, liquid ammonia containing catalyst circulating in a closed circuit to make up the quantity of ammonia removed in the saturated gaseous phase, the accumulation of non-volatile dissolve catalyst is avoided by introducing into the circuit a make-up quantity of liquid ammonia containing catalyst, said quantity being equal to the quantity necessary for saturation of the gaseous phase plus a quantity which is at least adequate to allow, by withdrawal of the liquid having the most catalyst, at a point of the circuit located adjacent to the outlet of the separate exchange, the removal of a quantity of catalyst which is at least equal to the quantity which has been introduced with the make-up liquid. In Fig. 2, ammonia leaves cold tower F and enters hot tower 1 via 3, and travels via 4 and 5 to tower 2 which is the separate exchanger for saturating the gaseous phase. The gaseous phase enter tower 2 via 6 and trowels via 7 to hot tower 1 and then via 9, heat exchanger 10, and 11 to the cold tower F. A closed circuit of liquid ammonia containing catalyst comprises tube 15, tower 2, tube 12, heat exchanger 10, tube 13, and reheater 14. In tower 2 part of the ammonia is removed in the gaseous phase. The circulating ammonia is supplemented by that leaving hot tower 1 via tube 5, and a conduit 16 in tube 12 is used to drain off ammonia which is more concentrated in catalyst than that entering tower 2. Thus the build-up of catalyst in the circulating ammonia is avoided.
