titleOfInvention High molecular weight linear polymers and process for preparing them
abstract High molecular weight linear polymers containing monomeric units of formula: <FORM:0950508/C3/1> where R2 is alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, cycloalkyl or a heterocyclic group and R3 and R4 are hydrogen atoms or the same or different alkyl or aryl groups are prepared by reacting an aldehyde of formula: <FORM:0950508/C3/2> in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organometallic compound, a hydride, an alkoxide or an amide of an alkali metal at -100 DEG C. to room temperature. The reaction may take place in the absence of a solvent using an excess aldehyde or in an inert solvent such as an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon or an ether and may be batch or continuous. Specified monomers are benzaldehyde, furfural, o-or p-chlorobenzaldehyde and m-nitrobenzaldehyde together with dimethylketene. Preferred catalysts are methyl, butyl, amyl, and phenyl lithium, phenyl ethyl lithium and lithium aluminium hydride. Specification 950,507 is referred to.
