titleOfInvention | Process for the production of siliceous pigments |
abstract | A process for the production of a siliceous pigment comprises rapidly acidifying an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate with an acid to provide a stable, silicate-ion free solution, distributing rapidly throughout the solution sufficient water-soluble metal salt and an alkali metal silicate to cause precipitation of a siliceous pigment. Acidification may be effected with hydrochloric acid nitric acid, nitreous acid, sulphuric acid, carbonic acid, phosphoric acid, sulphurous acid and organic acids such as acetic, formic and chloracetic acids and the water soluble metal salt is preferably calcium chloride NaCl ZnCl2, NaNO3, Ca(NO3)2, CaBr2, NaI, Na2SO4, NaAlO2 and KAlO2. Na2SiO3 is specified as alkali metal silicate. Separation of the pigment from its mother liquor may be facilitated by use of quaternary ammonium salts, high molecular weight amines, and aluminium salts e.g. AlCl3 and Al2(Sl4)3. Examples are given. |
