abstract Polyalkylene oxides are stabilized by one or more of the following:-a compound containing one or more iodine atoms; thiourea; an N-alkyl or aryl-thiourea; a substituted or unsubstituted mercaptobenzothiazole; 2-mercapto-imidazoline; an alkali metal thiocyanate. Examples of iodine compounds are ethyl, propyl and benzyl iodides, antimony triiodide, potassium iodide, bismuth triiodide, zinc iodide, stannous iodide, ammonium iodide and iodine itself. The polyalkylene oxide may be polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide and block copolymers thereof, and may be in solid, paste or liquid form. In examples, polyethylene oxide (Mol. wt. 2,000,000) and polypropylene oxide (Mol. wt. 1,000,000) are made into 0.1% solutions in water and benzene respectively and stabilized with 2-mercaptoimidazoline, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, cyclohexylamine salt of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, potassium thiocyanate, thiourea and with the above iodine compounds, and also, for comparison, with phenyl-beta-naphthylamine and nitrosodiphenylamine. A block copolymer is also tested against paraphenylenediamine and nitrosodiphenylamine.
