abstract | The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0949843/C2/1> <FORM:0949843/C2/2> (wherein R is hydrogen, hydroxy or acyloxy derived from a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms inclusive, R1 is hydrogen, a -methyl or b -methyl, and R2 is hydrogen or an acyl radical derived from a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms inclusive) together with a process for their preparation by reacting a compound of formula: <FORM:0949843/C2/3> (wherein R3 is hydrogen or a carbalkoxy group) with perchloryl fluoride and subjecting the resulting 2-fluoro -2- R3CO- compound to alkaline cleavage at the 2-position, preferably with potassium acetate in methanol, and finally hydrolysing the 20-ketal group, e.g. with p-toluene sulphonic acid in acetone. The novel esters may be in the form of water soluble salt such as the alkali metal salts of the hemisuccinates. The invention is illustrated by 15 detailed examples. Starting materials. D 5-pregnen -3b -ol-20-one or D 5-pregnene -3b , 17a -diol -20- one or their 16a - or 16b -methyl analogues are converted to their 20-ethylene ketals, which are then oxidised by the Oppenauer method to give the 20-ketals of the corresponding D 4-pregnene-3, 20-diones and subsequently treated with an alkyl formate or alkyl oxalate in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide to yield the alkali metal salts of 2-hydroxymethylene -20- ethylenedioxy -D 4-pregnen-3-one or of 2-alkoxyoxalyl-20-ethylene-dioxy -D 4-pregnen -3- one, or of their 17a -hydroxy and/or 16-methyl derivatives.
