| abstract | Tetravinyl lead is prepared by reacting vinyl magnesium bromide with dry powdered lead chloride in tetrahydrofuran.ALSO:Tetravinyl lead in amounts of at least 0.5 millitre per gallon of hydrocarbon fuel is added to a hydrocarbon base fuel boiling in the gasoline boiling range, said fuel having an octane number of at least 85, an aromatic hydrocarbon content of at least 20% by volume, not more than 30% by volume of olefinic hydrocarbons and not more than 80% by volume of paraffinic and naphthenic hydrocarbons. Other additives, e.g. tetraethyl lead, iron carbonyl derivatives, cyclopentadiene derivatives of manganese or iron, scavengers such as ethylene chloride or bromide, oxidation inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors and ignition suppressants may also be present in the compositions. |
