abstract 948,918. Photographic films; antistatic layers. KODAK Ltd. Feb.15, 1960 [Feb.16, 1959], No. 5236/60. Heading G2C. A photographic film comprises a support, a light sensitive silver halide emulsion layer on one side of the support and, on the other side of the support, an antistatic layer which is undyed and insoluble in aqueous alkaline photographic developer solution and which comprises a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene. The copolymer may for example be formed from styrene and budadiene. The polystyrene, in a solvent, may be coated on to the back of a film before or after the formation of the silver halide emulsion layer thereon. Suitable solvents referred to include chlorine substituted solvents such as trichloroethylene, methylene chloride, chloroform; ethyl and amyl acetate; ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone; and aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene. Orthochlorophenol is added to the solution when polyester films are used to ensure good adherence of the antistatic layer. A lubricant comprising one of the paraffins, waxes or a compound such as stearic acid, or glycerin oleate may be incorporated in or coated on the antistatic layer. Film supports referred to include cellulose acetate and other fatty acid esters of cellulose, polyesters-(for example polyalkalene terephthalate),polyamides, polycarbonates and polyvinyl chlorides.
