titleOfInvention | Process and apparatus for alteration of the charging state in disperse systems |
abstract | In a process for varying the charging state of dispersed systems of inorganic and/or organic origin for the purpose of sterilizing and utilizing the phases or substances contained therein, the dispersion systems are arranged concentrically between electrodes of carbon, where they are subjected to impulse-like discharged direct current fields, from high tension condensers. The process is effected with apparatus comprising several parallel mounted capacitors dischargeable by means of mercury reversible switches over carbon electrodes connected with them which serve to produce steep direct current impulses, the mercury reversible switches disconnecting the capacitors from the charge lead shortly before the commencement of discharge. High current amplitudes may be produced by causing the capacitors to discharge at the same time oscillatorily at high frequency and/or aperiodically in a very short time. The energy necessary for the attainment of the separation effect, the gradient of the discharge curve, the frequency of discharge, the strength of the magnetic field and a number of impulses in a cross-section of the material to be treated, is a function of the qualities of the system dependent on the desired effect. Examples describe (1) the separation of unwanted scums in centrifuging and filtration processes, (2) the extraction of sub-strata from animal and plant material, (3) the production of foams and emulsions, (4) the increase or decrease in the activity of enzymes, and (5) the manufacture of protein concentrates. Under (2) meat or fish is disintegrated, forced between concentrically arranged carbon electrodes. Following discharge the muscle threads contract and liberate the fluid they contain. After impulse treatment the materials separated into the phases aqueous, oleaginous and solid. A further development of this procedure sterilizes animal and plant substances and splits them into aqueous and oleaginous phases and solids for the extraction of substances from the separated phases. |
