abstract | Linear polyamides are made by condensing tere-and/or iso-phthalic acid with a substantially equimolar proportion of a polymethylene diamine having at least seven methylene groups one or more of which is substituted by alkyl groups each carbon atom of which carries at least one hydrogen atom and which together contain at least three side chain carbon atoms. Specified alkyl substituted diamines are 2-methyl-4-ethyl heptamethylene diamine, 2-ethyl-4-methyl-heptamethylene diamine, 2:2:5:5-tetramethyl heptamethylene diamine, 3-isopropyl heptamethylene diamine, 3-isooctyl heptamethylene diamine, 3:3:5-trimethyl octamethylene diamine and 2:4-diethyl octamethylene diamine. In the examples, polyamides are made from:-(I) terephthalic acid and 2-methyl-4-heptamethylene diamine; (II) terephthalic acid and 3:3:5-trimethyl octamethylene diamine; (III), (IV) and (VII) tere- and iso-phthalic acid and 2-methyl-4-ethyl-heptamethylene diamine; (V) tere- and iso-phthalic acid and 3:3:5-trimethyl octamethylene diamine, and (VI) tere- and iso-phthalic acid and 2:4-diethyl octamethylene diamine.
