titleOfInvention | Improvements in herbicides |
abstract | The invention comprises compounds of formula: <FORM:0947243/C2/1> where X is halogen, Y is H, NO2 or C1-4 alkyl, n is 1 or 2, R1 is C1-4 alkyl, one of R2 and R3 is H and the other is H or methyl. Specified compounds are 1-(p-chloro,- bromo- or fluorophenyl) -1- (2-hydroxyethyl) -3,3-dimethylurea; 1-butyl -3- (3,4-dichlorophenyl) -3- (2-hydroxyethyl or propyl)- 1-methylurea and its 1,1-dimethylurea analogues; 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)- 3,3-dimethyl -1- (3-methyl- or -nitro -4- chlorophenyl) urea; 1-(p-chlorophenyl) -3- ethyl -1- (2-hydroxyethyl) -3- methylurea and 1-(p-chlorophenyl) -1-(1-methyl -2- hydroxyethyl) -3,3- dimethylurea. The compounds are prepared by reacting together either the carbamoyl chloride CH3NR1COCl with the appropriate beta arylaminoethanol or the alcohol Cl-CHR2-CHR3OH with the sodium derivative of the appropriate arylurea.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise an inert carrier and a compound of formula <FORM:0947243/A5-A6/1> wherein X is halogen, Y is H, NO2 or C1-4 alkyl, n is 1 or 2, R is C1-4 alkyl, one of R2 and R3 is H and the other is H or methyl. Specified carriers in dusts are talcs, natural clays, pyrophillite, diatomaceous earth or walnut shell, wheat, redwood, soya bean and cottonseed flours. Wettable powders are made by grinding together the compound, an inert grinding aid (e.g. attapulgite clay, diatomaceous silica, or calcium silicates) wetting and dispersing agents. Granules are prepared by spraying prepared attapulgite granules with a solution of the compound or from a mixture of it with a binding clay. Specified diluents for liquid compositions are alkylated naphthalene, dimethylformamide and cresol. Specified surface-active agents for solid or liquid compositions are sodium, potassium, morpholine and dimethylamine oleates; sulphonated fish, castor and petroleum oils and sulphonated acyclic hydrocarbons; sodium ligninsulphonate and alkyl napthalenesulphonate; alkylaryl polyether alcohols. Unspecified fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides may also be included. Specific compositions described are: (1) water dispersible powder-fuller's earth, sodium lauryl sulphate, methylcellulose and 1 - (p - chlorophenyl) - 1 - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 3,3 - dimethylurea; (2) powdered concentrate for dilution with water and/or oil-alkylated arylpolyether alcohol, fuller's earth and 1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1 - (2 - hydroxyethyl) - 3,3 - dimethylurea; (3) water dispersible pellet-sodium sulphate, sodium isopropylnaphthalene sulphonate, Ca-Mg bentonite, 1 - (p - chlorophenyl) - 1 - (2 - hydroxypropyl)-3,3-dimethylurea. |
