abstract The invention comprises compounds of formula: <FORM:0946039/C2/1> where R1 is C2-6 haloalkyl or C3-6 haloalk-2-enyl, R is C1-8 hydrocarbyl and n is 0 or 1. They may be prepared by reacting a nitrophenol of formula: <FORM:0946039/C2/2> with a phosphonohalidothionate of formula: <FORM:0946039/C2/3> where Z is chlorine or bromine in the presence of an acid binder. The products are insecticides (see Division A5).ALSO:Insecticidal compositions comprise a phosphonothioate ester of formula <FORM:0946039/A5-A6/1> where R1 is C2-6 haloalkyl or C3-6 haloalk-2-enyl, R is C1-8 hydrocarbyl and n is 0 or 1 (for preparation see Division C2). Suitable forms include solutions, suspensions, emulsions, aerosols, pellets, granules, dusts and semi-solid compositions.
