titleOfInvention Compositions comprising polyimides and their production
abstract Polyamide-acid salts of silver, copper (cupric) or metals of Group II, of Group III having atomic weight at least 13, of Group IV having at. wt. at least 40, or of period 3 series 4 having at. wt. at least 24, prepared according to Specification 945,674 preferably having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.1, are converted to polyimides containing the above metals as particles having as their greatest dimension 1m by forming into a shaped structure (fibre or film), drying, and heating to at least 50 DEG C. The preferred metals are Ag, Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Cr and Mn. There are at least 0.1 mole of metal per polymer unit. The thermal and hydrolytic stabilities of the products may be improved by further heating to 300-500 DEG C. for 15-120 seconds. The conversion of the salts to polyimides may also be effected chemically. In Example 1, which illustrates the prefered embodiment, 4,41-diamino-diphenyl-methane and pyromethitic dianhydride are condensed in dimethyl formamide, a salt formed with copper acetylacetonate in pyridine, and acetylacetone added. A film was cast on glass, dried at 130 DEG C. for 30 min. in air, stripped off the glass and heated under nitrogen at 300 DEG C. for 30 min. Specifications 898,651 and 903,271 also are referred to.ALSO:Strippable films of polyamide-acid salts (prepared from polyamide-acids and from salts of silver, cupric, Group II metals, Group III metals of atomic weight at least 13, Group IV metals of atomic weight at least 40, and period 3 series 4 metals of atomic weight at least 24, as described in Specification 945,674) are formed by coating solutions in polar organic solvents e.g. dimethyl formamide, on to glass and drying. In Example 1, a 4,41-diamino-diphenylmethanepyromethitic anhydride condensate in dimethyl-formamide is formed into a salt by adding copper acetylacetonate in pyridine, and additional acetylacetone added. The mixture was centrifuged, cast on to glass plate using a doctor knife, and dried at 130 DEG C. for 30 minutes in air. Specifications 898,651 and 903,271 also are referred to.
