| abstract | The invention comprises 3-methoxy-17b -formyl-estra-1,3,5(10)-triene, the 17-semicarbazone thereof, and processes for the preparation of formyl substituted steroid compounds by treating an androstane or estrane derivative bearing a 17-ketone group or a pregnane derivative bearing a 20-ketone group with an alkoxy alkyl magnesium halide, so as to form respectively the corresponding 17-hydroxy -17-alkoxy-alkyl androstane or estrane derivative or 20-hydroxy -20- alkoxyalkyl pregnane derivative and then subjecting the latter to the action of an acid dehydrating agent to yield the desired 17-formyl androstane or estrane compound or 20-formyl pregnane compound. As Grignard reagents there may be used methoxymethyl magnesium chloride or bromide and ethoxymethyl magnesium chloride or bromide. As dehydrating agents there may be used oxalic acid or phosphoryl chloride. Specification 945,507 is referred to. |
