titleOfInvention | Fluorination of halopropanes |
abstract | Compounds of the formula: <FORM:0945017/C2/1> where each Y1 and Y2 is fluorine or chlorine, at least one being fluorine, and when both Y2's are chlorine at least one Y1 is chlorine, are prepared by contacting a compound: <FORM:0945017/C2/2> where each Y1 and Y2 is fluorine or chlorine and at least one is chlorine, with 1-12 moles of HF per mole of reactant at 200-500 DEG C. in the presence of a chromium oxide catalyst. The preferred starting material is CCl3.CF2.CCl3 and/or partially fluorinated derivatives thereof, which yield a mixture containing CF3CF2CF2Cl, CF2ClCF2CF2Cl, CF2ClCF2CFCl2, CFCl2CF2 CFCl2, and CFCl2CF2CCl3; any of these may be obtained as main product by suitable adjustment of reaction conditions, and less fluorinated products may be recycled. The preferred catalysts are those described in Specification 943,627. 2,2-Difluoropropane is prepared by reacting propyne with HF over a chromium oxide catalyst at 75-400 DEG C., and is chlorinated under u.v. irradiation to produce 1, 1, 1, 3, 3, 3-hexachlorodifluoropropane |
