titleOfInvention | Polyvinyl acetal compositions |
abstract | Heat curable compositions comprise by weight 100 parts of a polyvinyl acetal, 1 to 50 parts of a heat-hardenable phenol-aldehyde resin and 20 to 80 parts of a blocked polyisocyanate, i.e. polyisocyanate derivatives which yield a polyisocyanate on heating. The polyvinyl acetal may be a condensation product of a partially or fully hydrolysed polyvinyl ester with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde or benzaldehyde. The phenol-aldehyde resin may be derived from phenol, cresol, xylenols, ethyl phenol and para-t-butyl phenol with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and butyraldehyde. The polyisocyanate may be phenylene, tolyene, naphthalene, diphenyl methane, cyclohexanediol, ethylene, tetramethylene and hexamethylene diisocyanates and methylbenzene triisocyanates, and may be blocked by reaction with phenol, cresol, xylenols, secondary aromatic amines, tertiary alcohols, amides, lactams, mercaptans and enols. The compositions may be dissolved in anhydrous organic solvents, preferably mixtures of phenols, e.g. phenol, cresols or xylenols, and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. xylene and naphthalene, or aliphatic hydrocarbons, to give coating compositions, e.g. for coating glass, fibrous products and metals, especially electrical conductors. The compositions may also comprise fillers, pigments, dyes, stabilizers and lubricants, and may be cast, moulded or extruded. Specifications 351,082, 531,273, 752,589 and 755,942 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 755,942. |
