titleOfInvention Assimilable iron preparations
abstract 944,331. Pharmaceutical iron preparations. MERCK & CO. Inc. Sept. 13, 1960 [Sept. 30, 1959], No. 31546/60. Heading A5B. A substantially tasteless pharmaceutical iron preparation suitable for compounding into tablets and powders comprises a finely divided, solid, fat-insoluble, assimilable iron compound e.g. reduced iron, ferrous sulphate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous glutamate, ferric pyrophosphate or ferrous ammonium citrate coated with a fatty composition having a melting point of at least 45‹ C. consisting essentially of a mixture of C 14-18 saturated fatty acids and from 0 to 11% of oleic or linoleic acids or a mixture thereof. The coating may be carried out by any process wherein the iron compound is suspended in the molten fatty composition which is subdivided and chilled e.g. by dropping into a cooled liquid bath or by means of conventional " spinning disc " and " spray-chilling " methods the last being preferred.
