titleOfInvention | Substituted 2-oxo-3:3-di-(para-hydroxyphenyl)-1-thiaindanes and process for their manufacture |
abstract | The invention comprises 2-oxo-3:3-di(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1-thiaindanes which are substituted in the thiaindane residue by at least one substituent selected from halogen atoms, lower (1-6C) alkyl groups and lower alkoxy groups; their phenolates and esters; and their preparation by condensing an appropriate 2:3-dioxo-1-thiaindane with phenol, followed, if desired, by conversion of a resulting free hydroxy compound into a phenolate thereof, or vice versa, or conversion of a free hydroxy compound or phenolate into an ester.ALSO:Disinfecting and preserving agents contain, in admixture or conjunction with a suitable diluent, a 2-oxo-3 : 3-di-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1-thiaindane which is substituted in the thiaindane residue by at least one substituent selected from halogen atoms, lower (1-6 C) alkyl groups and lower alkoxy groups, or a phenolate or ester thereof; the process of treating inanimate materials therewith is also claimed. Solutions, emulsions, ointments, creams, powders and tinctures are mentioned which can be applied to the skin, instruments and textiles. Specified esters are those formed with alkane carboxylic acids e.g. acetic, propionic, butyric and trimethyl acetic. Specified phenolates are the sodium, potassium or calcium phenolates.ALSO:Foods and feeds are preserved against bacteria and fungi by the use of 2-oxo-3:3-di(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1-thiaindanes substituted in the thiaindane residue by at least one halogen atom, lower (1-6c) alkyl group or lower alkoxy group, and their phenclates and esters. |
