titleOfInvention Metal cleaning and polishing compositions
abstract A metal polishing composition which is especially suitable for cleaning silver comprises (a) a -phase calcined alumina in particulate form such that 90% or more passes a 325 mesh (Tyler) sieve, and (b) an anionic or non-ionic water-soluble detergent, the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being 50 : 1 to 1 : 1. In general (a) comprises 5-45% by weight, (b) comprises 2-30%, the ratio of (a) to (b) is 10 : 1 to 1 : 1 and the composition includes 50-90% water. It is preferred that the alumina consist of hexagonal crystals whose long dimension is about 0.8m and whose thickness is about 0.2m . The detergent (b) is suitably a C8-22-soap, and preferably triethanolamin stearate, but many other suitable soaps and anionic and non-ionic synthetic detergents are specified, It is preferred to produce the composition in paste form, and to stabilize the paste 0.005-5% of a gelling agent, e.g. methyl-, hydroxypropylmethyl-, and sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose, polyvinylpyrrolidone, or Irish moss gum, is incorporated. A humectant, e.g. glycerol, propylene glycol or sorbitol, in amounts of 0.1-10%, and up to 5% of such salts as sodium carbonate or trisodium phosphate, are generally also included. Perfume, colour, tarnish inhibitors, and bactericides such as hexachlorophene may also be present and the composition may be compounded in any order providing that a temperature of 100 DEG C. is not exceeded during mixing; if soap is to be used, it is preferred that the fatty acid and the soap forming base be added separately to form the soap in situ. In a preferred embodiment, the composition is contained in an aerosol type dispenser, in which case the composition contains a propellant, such as propane, isopropane, butane or isobutane, in amounts of 1-20%. Alternative propellants which may be used include compressed air or compressed nitrogen.
