titleOfInvention A method for manufacturing xanthosine by fermentation
abstract Xanthosine is prepared by cultivating at 20 DEG to 40 DEG C. and a pH of 5 to 8 a guanine-requiring mutant strain of Aerobacter aerogenes in a nutrient medium comprising assimilable sources of carbon, nitrogen and inorganic salts and guanine, godnosine or guanylic acid in an amount less than that required for the maximum growth of the microorganism. The guanine, guanysine or guanylic acid may be used in the form of their non-toxic salts (e.g. the hydrochlorides), or may be provided by materials such as yeast extract, fish extract or the acid hydrolysate of microorganisms. Concentrations of 30-100 mg./litre are preferred. The mutant strain of Aerobacter aerogenes is preferably ATCC No. 14,304. Xanthylic acid, adenylic acid and inosinc acid are formed as by-products.
