Homopolymers of 2,3-dimethyl-butadiene-1,3, and copolymers thereof with other conjugated diolefins are made by polymerizing the monomer or mixture of monomers in the presence of a hydrocarbon solution of a catalyst formed by reacting an organometallic compound of the formula MR n-1 X in which M is a metal of Group II or III of the MendelÚeff Periodic Table, R is an alkyl or aryl group, X is a halogen atom, and n is the valency of the metal M, with a compound of a metal of Group VIII of the Table. The polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously. The other conjugated diolefin may be butadiene-1,3. The Group VIII compound may be a complex with pyridine. The exemplified catalyst system is diethylaluminium chloride, cobalt chloride, and pyridine. The polymers of 2,3-dimethyl-butadiene-1,3 are characterised by their infra-red spectrum and the copolymers with butadiene by having the butadiene units arranged to an extent of about 89À9% in a cis-1, 4 configuration.
