titleOfInvention Process for accelerating the peroxidic hardening of mixtures of unsaturated polyester resins and olefinically unsaturated esters of phosphorus acids
abstract The peroxidic hardening of mixtures of (1) phosphorus-free unsaturated polyester resins, which are polycondensates of olefinic polycarboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols in admixture with olefinic comonomers, and (2) olefinically unsaturated esters of phosphorus acids is accelerated by addition of 0,001 to 10% by weight of the total mixture of at least one monoto tetra-isocyanate substituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic compound having the formula R(N=C=O)x where x is an integer from 1 to 4 and R is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical which may contain other substituents which do not react with isocyanates. The polyesters may be derived from maleic, fumaric or itaconic, with or without adipic or phthalic, acids and ethylene or diethylene glycol. Specified comonomers are styrene, methyl styrene, vinyl acetate, chloracetate and propionate and acrylonitrile. Phosphorus acid esters specified are allyl and methallyl esters of phosphorous, phosphoric and alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl phosphonic acids. Isocyanates specified are octadecyl, dodecyl, cyclohexyl and phenyl monoisocyanates; tetra- and hexa-methylene, naphthalene and 4,41-dicyclohexyl-methane diisocyanates and the triisocyanate of leucorosaniline; the hydrocarbon radicals may be substituted by halogen, nitro or alkoxy. Peroxidic hardening may be effected by dialkyl, diaryl, arylalkyl and acyl peroxides, hydroperoxides, per-acids and per-esters; methyl ethyl ketone p peroxide is used in the specific example. The compositions of the invention may be used as casting resins, coating products, lacquers, dispersions and adhesives. They may also comprise fillers, e.g. silica, dyestuffs, pigments, plasticizers or reinforcing materials, e.g. glass fibres.
