abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0939019/IV(a)/1> (wherein R1 is alkyl of at most 4 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen or methyl and R3 is hydrogen or alkyl of at most 4 carbon atoms) and pharmaceutically acceptable acid-addition salts thereof, and their preparation as acid-addition salts (1) by reducing acid-addition salts of compounds of the formula <FORM:0939019/IV(a)/2> to give products wherein R2 is hydrogen, which products may then be N-methylated by hydrogenation in ethanolic solution in the presence of Adams platinum catalyst and formaldehyde or by heating (as free bases or salts) in aqueous solution with formic acid and formaldehyde and, when R3 is hydrogen, sodium formate. The reduction may be effected with hydrogen in dry methanol or ethanol in presence of Adams platinum catalyst at 20 to 50 DEG C. and 1 to 10 atmospheres. Acid-addition salts, e.g. hydrochlorides, and free bases may be interconverted by conventional methods. Detailed examples are provided. The piperidine derivatives of the invention, which are stated to possess analgesic properties, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions. A tablet containing ethyl 1,1-diphenyl - 2 - (21-piperidyl) - propionate hydrochloride is described. Specification 930,459 is referred to.
