titleOfInvention Polyesters and their use in the production of cellular polyurethanes
abstract Polyesters having a hydroxyl number of 350-500 are made by reacting (1) a polycarboxylic acid, (2) a polyhydric alcohol of formula <FORM:0937688/IV(a)/1> wherein the alkylene radical has at least 2 carbon atoms, x, y and z are whole numbers whose sum is 3-10, at least two of the <FORM:0937688/IV(a)/2> groups contain primary hydroxyl groups, and R is an alkyl or alkenyl group containing 10-25 carbon atoms and (3) a polyhydric alcohol containing only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in such an amount that 10 hydroxyl groups are supplied for every 0,1 to 15 hydroxy groups supplied by (2). Specified for (1) are adipic, sebacic, oxalic, succinic, maleic, citric, phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic and dimer acids. Specified for (3) are ethylene-, propylene-, butylene-, diethylene-, polyethylene- and polypropyleneglycols; also trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane, hexanetriol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and mannitol. Cellular polyurethanes are made by reactin the polyesters with a polyisocyanate in the presence of water, an emulsifying agent and possibl a fluorinated hydrocarbon blowing agent (see Group V). Specifications 700,617 and 784,398 are referred to.ALSO:Dimensionally stable, rigid, non-brittle, cellular polyurethanes are made by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a polyester of hydroxyl number 350-500 and obtained by reacting (1) a polycarboxylic acid (2) a polyhydric alcohol of formula <FORM:0937688/V/1> wherein the alkylene radical has at least 2 carbon atoms,x,y and z are whole numbers whose sum is 3-10, at least two of the -(-alkylene-O-)- <FORM:0937688/V/2> group contain primary hydroxyl groups, and R is an alkyl or alkenyl group containing 10-25 carbon atoms and (3) a polyhydric alcohol containing only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in such an amount that 10 hydroxyl groups are supplied for every 0,1 to 15 hydroxyl groups supplied by (2). Specified for (1) are adipic, sebacic, oxalic, succinic, maleic, citric, phthalic, isophthalic, p terephthalic and dimer acids. Specified for (3) are ethylene-, propylene-, butylene-, diethylene-, polyethylene- and polypropylene-glycolic, also trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane, hexanetriol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and mannitol. Reaction between the polyisocyanate and the polyester may be affected in the presence of water or a fluorinated hydrocarbon blowing agent (e.g. difluorodichloromethane) and together with an emulsifir (e.g. a polyethylene glycol ricinoleate, a silicone oil, asorbitan ester of a fatty acid or a quarternarz ammonium salt). Specifications 700,617 and 784,398 are referred to.
