titleOfInvention Improvements relating to halogen-containing hydrocarbon polymers
abstract Halogen-containing hydrocarbon polymers whose thermal decomposition is at least partially attributable to the loss of halogen acid, are stabilized by adding at least one olefinically unsaturated terpene or an oxygen, hydrocarbon or halogen derivative of such a terpene, at least one thio compound having the formula R-S-H or R-S-S-R1 where R and R1 are the same or different and are alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, thioalkyl, carboalkoxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, aralkyl, aryl, alkaryl, haloaryl, thioaryl, thioalkaryl, carboalkoxyaryl, carboxyaryl, cycloalkyl or thienyl groups, and a small amount of a finely dispersed zinc compound which may be an organometallic compound of zinc having the formula R112Zn where R11 is an aryl group or an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a zinc derivative of a compound having at least one active hydrogen atom and an ionization constant of at least 1 X 10-6, or zinc or zinc oxide. The preferred halogen-containing polymers are those in which the halogen is fluorine or chlorine, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers. The term "olefinically unsaturated terpene" includes both the naturally-occurring and synthetically prepared terpenes and mixtures of tepenes; these have the general formula (C5H8)x where x is 2 to 6 and may be monocyclic, bicyclic, tricyclic or polycyclic. The preferred terpenes are the bicyclic ones and their oxygen, hydrocarbon and halogen derivatives, wherein one ring of the bicyclic terpene contains no more than four carbon atoms and the second ring carries at least one exoalkylene group. Long lists of terpene compounds are given, the most preferred being b -caryophyllene, b -pinene, pinocarveol and nopadiene. The preferred thio compounds are the organic thiols R-S-H where R is an alkyl group containing at least 8 carbon atoms, e.g. decanethiol, dodecanethiol and octadecanethiol. Lists of thiols and disulphides are given. Preferably concentrations of at least 1% of the terpene compound and at least 1% of the thio compound, based on the weight of the additives plus polymer, are used. The preferred zinc compounds are the carboxylic acid salts, the mercaptides, the hydroxide, the alkoxides or aryloxides and the organometallic compounds having the formulae <FORM:0936770/IV(a)/1> R112S2Zn and Zn(OR111)2 where R11 is as above and R111 equals R11 or is hydrogen. Lists of zinc compounds are given and the zinc compound may be used in such an amount that the final composition contains 3 to 50 parts by weight of zinc per million parts by weight of the polymer. Shaped structures of the stabilized composition are formed by blending a mixture of the polymer, terpene compound, thio compound and zinc compound until a homogeneous single phase composition results and then forming the composition into a shaped structure and cooking. Fillers, dyes, plasticizers, pigments and delusterants may be added. Many examples of stabilizer compositions are given. Specifications 899,830 and 901,746 are referred to.
