abstract The invention comprises polychlorobenzyl isothiouronium chlorides of the formula <FORM:0936766/IV(a)/1> wherein n is 4 or 5, which may be prepared by reacting a corresponding polychlorophenyl methyl chloride with thiourea at an elevated temperature in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. ethanol, propanol, butanol, isobutanol or a glycol. In an example pentachlorobenzyl-isothiouronium chloride is prepared by boiling a mixture of pentachlorobenzyl chloride and thiourea in butanol. Other examples illustrate similar preparations of tetrachloro-m-, and -p-, and trichloro-m-, xylene-bis-isothiouronium chloride. Trichloro-p-xylene-bis-isothiouronium chloride and tetrachlorobenzyl-isothiouronium chlorides are also mentioned. These compounds may be used as rodent repellents (see Group VI). U.S.A. Specification 2,412,389 is referred to.ALSO:Rodent repellent compositions comprise one or more polychlorobenzylisothiouranium chlorides of the general formula <FORM:0936766/VI/1> wherein m is 1 and n is 4 or 5 or m is 2 and n is 3 or 4, in admixture with a rodent foodstuff. The active substance is present as 0.5% in foodstuff offered to mice. U.S.A. Specification 2,412,389 is referred to.
