abstract | Methyl esters of diphenylcarboxylic acids are recovered from a distillation residue obtained in the preparation of dimethyl tereand/or iso-phthalates according to Specification 729,989 or 809,730, by a process in which said residue is further esterified with methanol, dimethyl tere- and/or iso-phthalates are separated off, followed by digestion with a hot organic solvent such as methanol or xylene so as to yield soluble and insoluble p components at least one of which is subsequently purified, e.g. by distillation under reduced pressure or by recrystallisation from suitable solvents. When the digestion is effected with methanol, the methanol-insoluble component may be recrystallised from benzene, xylene, toluene or chloroform. Specified compounds which may be obtained by the process of the invention are trimethyl 2,41,5-diphenyltricarboxylate, dimethyl 4,41-diphenyldicarboxylate and dimethyl 3,4-benzocoumarindicarboxylate. |
