abstract | Phenol esters of aliphatic sulphonic acids (aliphatic radical of which is C10 to C20) which are used as plasticizers for nitrocellulose, chlorinated rubber and polyvinyl chloride are stabilized against oxidation and the action of light by incorporating in the plasticizer at least 0,1% by weight (based on the phenol ester) of compounds containing an epoxide group. The epoxy compound preferably contain up to 30 carbon atoms and preferably contain more than one epoxide group. Vegetable oils containing epoxide groups are mentioned. The preferred epoxy compounds are diglycide ethers of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, of ethylene glycol and of butane-1,4-diol and trimethylol propane diepoxide and trimethylol triepoxide.ALSO:Phenol esters of aliphatic sulphonic acids, the aliphatic radical of which contains 10 to 20 carbon atoms, are stabilised against oxidation and the action of light by adding to the ester at least 0,1% by weight (calculated on the weight of the ester) of a compound containing at least one epoxide group. The phenol esters (i.e. phenol, cresols and mixtures thereof) can be obtained by treating industrial mixtures of aliphatic hydrocarbons containing from 10 to 20 carbon atoms (e.g. those present in coke-gas benzine) with sulphur dioxide and chlorine under the action of light and reacting the products with phenols in the presence of acid binding agents. The epoxy compounds preferably contain up to 30 carbon atoms and preferably contain several epoxide groups. Vegetable oils containing epoxide groups are mentioned. The preferred compounds containing the epoxide groups are the diglycide ethers of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane, of ethylene glycol and of butane-1,4-diol and trimethylol propane diepoxide and trimethylol propane triepoxide. In Example (1) the products obtained from the reaction of sulphur dioxide on coke-gas benzine are reacted with a mixture of phenols and cresols. 100 parts by weight of the ester has added to it 0,5 parts by weight of the diglycide ether of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane. This mixture is exposed to U.V. light for 20 hours and then stored at 60 DEG C. in a drying chamber. Table I gives a list of the epoxide containing compounds used in similar experiments and includes epoxidised soya oil, lauryl glycide ether, phenoxy propene-2-oxide; isododecyl phenoxypropene oxide. Example (2) describes similar experiments involving different exposure times and storage times. The esters are useful as plasticisers for nitro cellulose, chlorinated rubber and polyvinyl chloride (see Group IV(a)). |
