titleOfInvention | Process for flameproofing olefine polymers and copolymers |
abstract | Flameproof olefin polymer compositions comprise a homogeneous mixture of an olefin polymer or copolymer with 5 to 80% by weight of the polymer of octachloro diphenylene dioxide and 3 to 50% by weight of the polymer of an oxide or sulphide of an element of Group V of the Mendel<\>eeff Periodic Table having an atomic weight of at least 74. The polymer may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene, pentene, methyl pentene, butadiene or mixtures thereof, or copolymers of such olefins with maleic, citraconic, itaconic, acrylic or methacrylic acids or their esters or nitriles, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate. Specified oxygen and sulphur compounds are antimony trioxide, antimony pentoxide, antimony trisulphide, antimony pentasulphide, arsenic trioxide, arsenic pentoxide, arsenic trisulphide and bismuth trioxide, which may be blended with the octachloro diphenylene dioxide before incorporation in the olefin polymer. Examples describe the preparation of compositions comprising octachloro diphenylene dioxide and (1) low pressure polyethylene and antimony trioxide, (2) an ethylenepropylene copolymer and antimony trioxide, (3) an ethylene-butene copolymer and arsenic trioxide, (4) high pressure polyethylene and antimony trioxide, (5) low pressure polyethylene, high pressuree polyethylene and antimony trioxide, (6) low pressure polyethylene, an ethylenepropylene copolymer and bismuth trioxide and (7) an ethylene-propylene copolymer and antimony trisulphide. Specifications 471,590, 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 810,023, 810,024, 819,867 are referred to. |
