titleOfInvention Coated abrasive
abstract A flexible coated abrasive sheet comprises a flexible backing sheet, a layer of abrasive grain bonded to said sheet by a first bonding adhesive, and a second coating of a bonding adhesive overlying the first bonding adhesive consisting essentially of a hardened mixture of (i) an amine catalysed phenolic resin in the liquid state, and (ii) 10 to 25% by weight, based on the total adhesive solids, of a polyoxyalkylene modifying agent formed by reacting ethylene oxide, or other alkylene oxide having an oxygen: carbon atomic ratio of at least 0,5:1, with a hydrophobic base formed by the reaction of propylene oxide with propylene glycol or other organic compound containing at least two active hydrogen atoms, namely hydrogen atoms which are sufficiently labile to open the epoxide ring of 1,2-propylene oxide and which react with methyl magnesium iodide to liberate methane in the Zarewitinoff Reaction, including such of these compounds having a molecular weight of 2,000 to 3,000, a hydrophobic unit of the molecule having a molecular weight of 1,200 to 2,250 and a hydrophilic oxyethylene or oxyalkylene substituent varying between 10 to 40% of the weight of the total. The mixture may be present in the grit-size coating. The flexible backing sheet, e.g. paper, may be impregnated with rubber, e.g. butadiene-styrene. The first bonding coat may be a solvent and water resistant resinous adhesive, e.g. Epon ester-dehydrated castor oil fatty acid and glyceryl phthalate alkyd resin mixture, an oil modified phenol aldehyde condensation product or an oil modified alkyd resin prepared from pentaerythritol and a polybasic acid. The phenolic resin may be the condensation product of phenol, 3,5-xylol, m-cresol or m-chlorophenol with an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde. The backing sheet may be backsized with an oil-modified phenolic and sized on the coat side with vinyl chloride and butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber.
